mix it up: literally!

are you throwing “green” or “natural” or “organic”-themed wedding? or are you and your fiance(e) into running, hiking, biking and everything active… and are big protein consumers? OR maybe you’re not a big candy fan, but you love the idea of a buffet for your wedding favors? mix it up: literally! in lieu of a candy buffet, why not do a make-your-own trail mix bar?

get some beautiful bowls and/or jars (a local favorite to find these is flower factory, hobby lobby, pat catans and joanns! or check out after-holiday sales in the home departments of kohl’s, target, etc.!) and fill them with the random ingredients that make up trail mix. gets some cute scoops or spoons, some cellophane bags ($1 for 30, $2 for 60 at pat catans) or maybe chinese food boxes, and some ribbon for ties in your wedding colors and voila.

here’s some ingredient ideas:

  1. peanuts, cashews, and/or almonds
  2. marshmallows
  3. raisins
  4. dried cranberries, blueberries, bananas or pineapple
  5. granola or cheerios
  6. peanut butter and/or butterscotch chips
  7. dark, milk or white chocolate chips and/or m&ms
  8. pumpkin or sunflower seeds
  9. pretzels
  10. goldfish crackers

here’s a quick video of the trail mix buffet i put together for a mini-40th birthday celebration:

and here’s the photo of my finished bag with my personal trail mix favorites:

Lizz Pruitt - Great post, Heidi! And given the economy now, I have a feeling the trail mix bar may save couples some $$.

My favorite is: peanuts + plain raisins OR yogurt covered.

Tara - Until the nut allergy, I was a peanut-m&m-raisin kinda girl. All at once. Not I just have to settle for m&m-raisin. Let me tell you… it’s just not the same..
Cute idea! All these kind of things are definitely the rage now… way to find a spin off of the traditional candy, etc. buffet!April 15, 2009 – 6:22 pm
