the last day of 2008. it sort of makes me sad in a way. 2008 was a great year for my husband and me. of course, a lot of that had to do with the fact that we got engaged (january 5, 2008) and got married (august 30, 2008) and had so much fun with family and friends in between. yet, the holiday brings so many good times with friends and family and a new year can mean so many new good times and opportunities. what i know it definitely brings is newly-engaged couples!
i’ve already heard of a three engagements in the past few days. supposedly over 1 million engagements, one-third for the entire year, occur during the holiday season. i have to believe that! i mean, with the cost of engagement rings these days, they do serve as fabulous christmas presents. i really have to wonder how many men have “popped the question” under the christmas tree or at the stroke of midnight on january 1!
i’m partial to engagements on new years eve over christmas. i think future fiancees-to-be may be expecting the christmas engagement… and might be a little bummed to not get their “christmas wish”. then, just one week later, they can be super surprised with a rock and then POP goes the champagne on cue. the whole starting anew thing with new years is a perfect time to go from “boyfriend and girlfriend” to “fiances”!
i’m also rather partial to new years eve engagements being that it is devin and my dating anniversary. we fell in love three years ago today at our friends codi and joe’s new years eve party.

two years later, we got engaged the weekend after new years on a mini-vacation devin gifted me for our two year anniversary. we stayed at tara – a country inn in clark, pa for two nights in the carpetbagger’s suite. the entire inn has a “gone with the wind” theme although to this day i still haven’t read the book OR seen the movie (oops.)
on the second night we were there, we had a five course meal at their main restaurant, ashley’s. during the fourth course, i thought i was getting apple tatin dessert, but instead a little black box with my engagement ring was under the silver dome that the server pulled off with pomp and circumstance as the pianist played a fanfare. devin got on one knee and asked me a simple four word question :)

and four months ago we said our “i do’s!”
