BIG DISCLAIMER: I’m not a court person, this is just how I went through the process!!!
FAQ’s about Marriage Licenses
1. Where do I get it? County Probate Court.
2. Which county? The county in which the one or both of you live. If neither of you are from the state of Ohio, then the county in which you are getting married in.
3. How much does it cost? Depends on the county. Between $40-$45 as of 8/20/08: (Cuyahoga $40, Lorain $43, Geauga $43, Summit $40) —- P.S. CASH ONLY.
4. What do I need? Photo ID and your SS#s. (We took our Birth Certificates and our SS Cards and they didn’t ask for them.) Oh and take divorce decrees if you’ve been married before. Actually, if you’ve been married before, why are you reading this?
5. How do I find out more? Google… or click these handy little provided links:
Cuyahoga County
Lorain County
Lake County
Geauga County
Ashtabula County
Summit County
6. What does it look like? - Funny you should ask… :) Ours is below. (Lorain Co.)
7. Now what? Um, get married. Your officiant will know what to do with it. S/he will send it one part and keep one part and give you the pretty part.
8. I need to change my name. You need to first take your ML to the SS office and get a new card. They give you something temporary in the meantime. (FREE!) Then you go to the Ohio BMV and get a new license. ($20…) Then, it’s easier to do everything else. If places require you to have a certified copy of your marriage license, you have to get it from the county it was filed in. ($1.00-$5.00) After that, don’t forget to change it with your work, doctors, utilities, tax people, insurance peeps, college, credit cards, voter’s registration, library, etc.
9. I’m not changing my name, am I done? Yep. (And I respect that a lot. Go you.) But don’t forget you have to update your tax status (they want more taxes from you) and if you need to get on any home owner deeds (or vice versa) and home insurances… beneficiaries of IRAs… and all that other fun legal stuff that I don’t know about — and don’t want to know about.
10. Wait, so that’s it? Well, yeah. It’s not that bad… Except for the fact that most Probate office hours are 8 to 4 Monday to Friday so that could be a problem for the 9 to 5ers…
